1) I'm not 100% sure on whether
this was the case as early as 1948, but by the early '50s, The Huntsville
Times (which owned WHBS-FM/FM) and The Birmingham News (parent
company of WSGN-AM/FM) were owned by the same company - S. I. Newhouse.
(Today, they're still sister papers).
2) Both stations were ABC affiliates.
Which means even if they weren't
yet co-owned, these FM stations were 'nudging in' on each other's "protected"
territory.
WHBS-AM would change to WAAY in
1958, and 'HBS-FM went on to a long tenure as a religious station (WNDA).
Just as WSGN-FM would eventually end up (WDJC).
And
should that Crosley ever need fixin'?
(RIGHT)Well, at least my mother's name is in there ... perfect spelling, and
all!
